What is Institutional Sexual Abuse?

Institutional sexual abuse refers to the sexual abuse of a person that is perpetrated and/or concealed by an organization or system, such as:

In many instances, the institution is aware of sexual abuse but dismisses reports or complaints. All too frequently, the institution even engages in the concealment of such abuse. Institutions might refuse to conduct an investigation or to report allegations of abuse to authorities. Such conduct results in a lack of accountability for the perpetrator and continued abuse.

What are the Effects of Institutional Sexual Abuse?

The general public typically views institutions, such as schools, universities, healthcare facilities, and religious organizations, as trustworthy and authoritative and as having the best interests of its students, patients, congregants, and others in mind. When these institutions fail to address or cover up sexual abuse, survivors may experience even greater trauma and may suffer from physical and emotional symptoms, including disease, depression, and isolation.

Survivors may also experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or complex PTSD. Holding institutions and perpetrators accountable can go a long way towards healing for survivors of institutional sexual abuse.
